What is Somatics?

Put simply, Somatics is a method of slow, focused, simple movements which allow muscles to release chronic tension, giving lasting pain relief and a new way of sensing and moving the body.

Most chronic pain, recurring injuries and joint degeneration are caused by the way we use our bodies. The way we sit, stand, walk and move throughout our lives creates habitual movement patterns. The more we repeat a certain movement or posture, the more deeply the brain learns that muscular pattern. Our movements become automatic, this is referred to as muscle memory and is vital in allowing us to function every day without having to relearn how to walk up the stairs or make our breakfast! However, if these movement patterns become dysfunctional the result is pain. The only way to change these deeply learned patterns is to re-educate the brain, because the brain controls the muscles.

Somatics is a tool which enables us to fix our own pain, targeting the root cause, rather than relying on expensive treatments and medication, which only offer temporary solutions.

"We cannot sense without acting and we cannot act without sensing."

- Thomas Hanna, PhD

What makes Somatics different?

We are the only ones who can unlearn our old habits and make new ones. It’s our brain that makes our muscles work, so it must be us in the driving seat of re-educating the brain to regain control of the muscles. Each of our bodies moves in its own unique way, somatics gives us the opportunity to recognise and correct all of that stuck tension and stress causing us pain and discomfort.

What conditions can Somatics help?

·         Chronic muscular and joint pain

·         Headaches and migraine

·         Sciatica

·         Plantar fasciitis

·         Scoliosis

·         Fibromyalgia

·         TMJ

·         Piriformis syndrome

·         Stiffness and poor posture

·         Bursitis

·         Carpal Tunnel

·         Frozen shoulder

·         Osteoarthritis

·         Tendonitis

·         Whiplash

The benefits of Somatics include:

·         Releases chronic muscle tightness

·         Improved flexibility and range of joint motion

·         Helps prevent injuries and recurrence of injury

·         Improves balance

·         Reduces stress

·         Improves sleep and breathing

"The basic somatic task during our lifetime is to gain greater and greater control over ourselves, learning to flow with the stress and trauma of life, like a cork floating on top of the waves."

- Thomas Hanna, PhD

Is Somatics for me?

If you are in pain, suffer from recurring injuries, postural imbalances or are stuck in stress, somatics is for you.

Somatic movement is a slow and gentle learning practice suitable for people in any physical condition. You do not need to be physically fit, this is not exercise! All the movements are simple, achievable, performed without pain and within your comfort range. And to top it off, it feels great!
